Education Focus Group Highlights Obesity

08/16/08

One of the goals of the Indiana Extension Homemakers Association is to strengthen families through continuing education.

The Education Committee focused on obesity and literacy for the 2007-2008 program. With many reading programs already established including First Books for Kids, our main topic was to focus on Obesity.

A new package lesson and brochure "Snacking Smart" was completed. It is available from your Extension office or county president.

We specifically want to emphasize snacking nutritionally. Who doesn't like to snack? Snacks can be an important part of a healthy diet. Included with the new package lesson are handouts entitled "How Can I Make It Healthier?" and "Fruits and Vegetables On The Go".

The brochure can be handed out at your reading programs, fairs and special events. Use the snack recipes, included with the lesson, for educational food demonstrations. We ask that members complete the evaluation form which is included with the lesson and send it to your county extension office.

The committee also monetarily sponsored one of the keynote speakers at Home and Family Conference this year.

We will continue to work with other agencies in our counties, creating awareness of the educational opportunities available through IEHA.
